I'm not aware of any changes or new software associated with the appearance
of this problem. I'm running Win XP Pro SP2 upgraded from Win Me about 1 1/2
years ago. I am also running NIS 2004 or 2005 on each of the machines in
my network. I tried the fix from Symantec (described in another message
here) to reset the winsock catalog. It did not help.
I have been running Eudora e-mail client ver 6.2.3.4. When this problem
started, I downloaded and installed Mozilla Thunderbird, just to try a
different e-mail client. Neither client is able to connect and download
mail. Eudora shows that it gets to the point of "Logging into POP Server"
and "Connecting to Mail Server" however, it goes no further. Thunderbird
does not provide such progress indication.
I have tried connecting to my e-mail server, Netidentity.com via telnet and
get no response. I can access the webmail service at NetIdentity.
I have three PCs on my local area network connected via an Enet Router to
Verizon DSL service. All of these machines have been running well. All
machines except the problem machine (call it PC A, the others, B & C). I can
connect to the Net Identity server from B and C with no problems using either
Eudora or Thunderbird. When attempting to connect PC A using Eudora I get a
failure indication "Error reading from network. Cause Eudora got tired of
waiting for the server. (10100).
I also find that I cannot download an Adobe reader upgrade, no download
traffic is indicated. When I monitor the network traffic using the Microsoft
performance monitor, I see some traffic when I open a browser but none when
requesting e-mail; even if I open the traffic monitor up to full screen mode.
I notice that PC A takes a long time to shut down (like 3 minutes) and that
programs involving download (other than web browsers or FTP) frequently stop
reaponding and sometimes cannot be killed.
Once, during the process of testing, Thunderbirds seemed to connect and
download headers for a half-dozen or so messages correctly, but then it could
not download the content for several of those messages. To the best of my
knowledge, I had done nothing different whenTBird worked than from other
attempts to download e-mail.
ANy ideas or suggested contacts?
