Win XP settings exporter/importer...

Byru

Hi, i am trying to find out what freeware can i use to do the following:

I am using Win XP SP2 and as You know from time to time You have to
reinstall the whole system.
Because i am currently using my configuration for over 1 year i made a lot
of tweaks (in registry), color settings, sound settings, start menu
settings, icons, system services configuration and more tweaks that help me
to work with Windows.

Is there any software that will export the current configuration of all (or
most) of theese and than on a new system will inport this config from the
exported file? I was looking for such a thing but didnt find it.

THX for help in advance

It might just be built into your OS. Look up "file and settings transfer
wizard".

Hi Byrus!

I write down any installed programm. Then backing up relevant data
(E-mails, News, not yet backuped-files etc.). Exporting relevant data
(OE, Outlook, Favourites etc.. Links..E-amail/News and other Accounts).

Zero writing the HD (long) and let´s go --- :)
Sometimes I leave the other partitions as they are and I do only a
reinstall of Windows on the same starting partittion w/o deleting
unneccessary files (could be also removed after). It´s speeding up as a
new "formatted" installation, indeed.

Not easy but free.

OK! I'll bite. Why would you need to reinstall XP SP2 from
time to time unless there is a system crash? This machine
has logged over 40K hours operation w/o a system crash and
still performs well. It has over 350GB apps and data and
runs 16-20 hrs/day 7 days/wk - all online. It has a
fulltime firewall and Avast! installed. It is periodically
scanned with Spybot and Adaware. Even when it has had a
problem related to a couple of introduced bugs, it has been
corrected w/o reinstalling. I have another machine with
similar experiance with the exception of requiring a repair
install to replace a bad MOBO. It came right back to life
and hasn't missed abeat since. Since my upgrade from
Win98SE transition to XP, I have found XP to be an entirely
new world compared to earlier Windows that needed a
reinstall at every glitch, memory over run, change in the
moon or whatever. I just can't see any justification for
the time required to do a reinstall for the small
performance gain that may or may not be realized. The only
other reason I see to do a reinstall is to get rid of things
you do not want found by others.

Yes, i mean in case of a crash ;] I also keep my OS tidy so the reinstalls
are not that often, but in case i need to do this i would love to have such
a tool that will recover my settings from last system to th new one.
The system transfer settings wizard doesnt support services and all the
other settings different than the most ordinary.

You do ? Then consider upgrading to win 98SE. I have NEVER had to
reinstall the whole system.

The problem is that if you have to reinstall Windows, it's probably
because one (or more) of those settings is messed up. By reimporting
them to the new install, you haven't accomplished anything - you've
spent an hour to end up with an install of Windoes that has to be
reinstalled.
