WIN XP Repair through the Repair Console "PLEASE HELP!!"

I have an XP machine that somehow got some corruption on the
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file & had a message during the boot
process that the system file was either corrupt, or missing & that I could
try to repair it with the original installation CD repair concole.

I booted the machine from the installation cd & selected the R & 1 for the
C:\windows installation & tried to type the system file to check on the
output. I got the error that the file was un-readable, so I ran the chkdsk
/f several times to clean up any file errors. I re-tried the type command &
this time it read a small amount of machine code. I re-booted & got the same
error as before.

When I checked the file size compared to my lap top (which is also running
xp) & the one on the faulty machine was significantly smaller than the one
on the lap top even though the lap top has a lot less software installed on
it. I therefore believe the system file to be faulty & am desperate to know
how I can get round this problem. I'm nearing the point of puting a new hard
drive in the PC & building it from scratch & then installing the drive with
the problem into it as a slave to allow me to retreive data from it. I would
much prefer a "quick fix though as there is software on the suspect drive
that I've lost the cds to & need this working as soon as possible.

How to I re-create / repair / resolve a problem with a faulty/corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system file?
