To anyone who can help
I am a student at the University of Southern Indiana, in the Professional Business Fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi. I am trying to upgrade my Gateway solo 2300 from Windows 98 to Windows XP Professioanl. The laptop came with a newly formatted hard drive, with nothing on it. We started out with ind. 95 then updated to 98. From 98, there were no problems updateing what so ever. Now that I am trying to upgrade to Professional, the set up quits after reboot, and said that setup cannot complete, hard drive C: is corrupted. Is there anyting I can do to fix this problem? I dont understand why Windows 95 and 98 can work and install just fine, but Windows XP wont. Thank you for your time and any help you may be able to give

Thank you

You don't need to have 95 and 98 installed first; that might be where the
problem is. Boot from the XP CD, delete the existing partitions, and start
over. If you have an XP upgrade, at some point it will ask for proof that
you have a previous version. Insert the 98 CD and let it confirm, and when
it tells you, put the XP CD back in and finish the install.

In addition to the excellent advice from D.Currie, before starting the
install, go to the Gateway site and download their Windows XP drivers for
your specific model of laptop. You will need them.

Keep in mind that XP is far more finicky about hardware than is DOS-based
versions of Windows. Windows XP may, indeed, be finding problems with your
hard disk that Win 95/98 didn't notice.

Judging from all your post responses you don't know what to do on ANY
occassion so why tell that to others?

I dont think you can upgrade from windows 98 to XP. It has to be a fresh
installation. AS you have the XP installation cd just start a fresh
installation. that seems the best way to me.

Of course you can upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP.

Windows XP OEM, on the other hand, will not install as an upgrade.

Try running the XP Upgrade Advisor, on the XP CD.

Not all your hardware may be supported in XP, also you might need to
download new drivers for it.

For more information, you might look in the laptop's manufacturer web
site and see what they have to say about an XP upgrade.

Good luck
