Win XP Prof - HELP start

My husband just downloaded the latest update for Win EP
Prof and now can't even start his computer in Safe Mode.
Any suggestions?

For safe-mode,shut down the pc,on starting tap the F8 key,select
start in safe-mode or start normal-mode. If you cant do that,install x
cd,restart computer,or shut-off,on restarting,the text appears" press any ke
to boot to cd", in the next info page,select,recovery,press the enter key fo
password,at the curser type:CHKDSK C: /
C: being the hard drive xp is on,when its thru,type:EXI
Remove cd,let windows start up on its own.
