Slow startup Troubleshooting tools?

I performed a clean reintstall of Win XP Prof. I am getting a long blank
screen pause between the "Win XP blue indication bar" screen and the "enter
user password" screen. I assume the Win is looking for something or wiating
for some response or loading something during this time. Is there any way I
can watch exactly what application or process Win is loading/executing during
starup? I've cleaned/defragged and gone through all the stratup items in
msconfig.exe yet this continues. I have many many processes running after
the computer is started and not knowing what they are or how they got loaded
makes stopping them difficult or even dangerous to the proper functioning of
my computer. After the startup my computer is performing well.

At that "long" black screen, Xp is most likely setting up the graphics
subsystem and initializing the GFX card.... just let it be..

Before I did the clean reinstall of Win XP Prof I did not encounter this
delay. I'd like to try to determine its cause and correct the situation.
Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks.

Nvidia GeForce4 440 GO

NVIDIA Driver 4/7/2004 Version: 5.6.7.3

I went to the Nvidia site and found no more recent drivers. Windows Device
Manager and Windows Update found no more recent driver either. Thanks.

"ForceWare Release 80 graphics driver is the graphics driver for all NVIDIA
graphics processing units (GPUs). ForceWare Release 80 supports 2D graphics,
DirectX 9, OpenGL 2.0, nView Desktop Management software version 3.5,
NVRotate. NVKeystone, Digital Vibrance Control and includes a new control
panel."

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

then Graphics Driver -> GeForce and TNT2 -> Windows XP/2000

should work according to text above asI don't think there's specific driver
for that onboard (laptop) GPU

I had already gone through this driver update procedure before I posted to
make sure I had the latest version. I did it again to make sure and again
was told the setup program could not locate drivers that are compatible with
my current hardware. looking further I found a Nvidia note saying that
because I have a laptop the hardware is very specialized and laptop maker is
the place to go for drivers. I'm off to Dell.com to look for drivers. I'll
post when I have an update, thanks.

Got the latest drivers from Dell, does not affect the startup time. Maybe it
is time to let it be unless you have another suggestion.

Thanks
