win xp problem

system lockup required power down of pc and win xp not
loading correctly. enters welcome screen and when user
icon is selected, starts to load settings and displays
back drop briefly, but then goes into logoff mode and
returns to welcome screen. have tried logging on thru
safe mode using admin icon, but same thing. may nned to
reload xp but afraid of losing all files and info on
drive. Is there another possiblity?

Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration' - same screen as Safe Mode.

Not sure what to do here, but Last Known Good won't work, as they are
logging in and being logged out again, and LKG gets overwritten at log-in.
