Win XP Pro won't start in safe mode

The prompt in startup that asks you which operating
system you want to use has vanished from my system, so I
can't get to safe mode. Pressing F8 after startup
doesn't appear to help either. Any ideas? Thanks.
 
Susan, assuming you can start in the normal mode... try...

Start>Run>msconfig

Click the "General Tab" and choose "Diagnostic Startup" which I think
is the equivalent of Safe Mode...

Click ok and reboot...
