Win XP Pro will only start in safe mode after installing a new CD-RW

Hello,
Didn't know if anyone can help me...
I have a Versa LX with Win XP pro installed. It has been
running fine until I tried to upgrade my CD player to a
CD-RW(Matsushita[Panasonic] model UJDA360).

I swapped the CD with the CD-RW in the versa bay and now
the only way I can get Windows to run is in safe mode. If
I try to start normally it gets to the Windows XP logo
screen and then just freezes after 5 seconds or so. I
have to shut it down manually (holding the power button
for 10 sec).

I contacted support at NEC and they said that there
shouldn't be any problems with the compatability of the
CD-RW and the laptop. Because it does work in Safe mode,
they thought that it might need drivers updated.

I can't find drivers anywhere for this model and from
what I have read, Win XP provides all the neccessary
default drivers that the hardware would need.

Can anyone help me with this problem? If I switch back to
the CD player in the versa Bay it works again.

Thanks for your help.
