Laptop won't go to 800x600 outside of Safe Mode

I have a NEC Versa LX with WinXP that I'm trying to get to run at
800x600. In safe mode it will switch to 800x600, but while not in safe
mode (even in VGA mode from the F8 boot menu), the screen goes blank or
gets crazy stripes and blobs all over it. I have to power cycle to get
the screen back.

I tried updating WinXP's video drivers with drivers from ATI and
booting in to a Linux LiveCD thinking that it might be a drivers issue,
but both of these scenarios had the symptom too.

Does the group have any ideas for how to diagnose/solve this problem?

Thanks!

Most laptops do not accept the 4x3 aspect ratio. Right click on the desktop,
choose Properties and then click on the Settings tab. Choose the setting
that you want there. It should display only those that your display
supports.
