XP not going into Safe Mode

G

Guest

I'm trying to boot XP in safe mode. I hit F8, select safe mode, get to the
"safe" log-in screen and hit enter, then....instead of going into safe mode
it flashes an error message faster than I can read it (something like Error,
cannot...) and reboots the machine back into regular windows mode.

Any thoughts on how to get into Safe Mode?

Thanks much!

Bronco,

From the run cammand type in the following

MSCONFIG

then under the systems configuration utility opens chosose the 4th tab to
the left boot.ini and check the safeboot option.

I wouldn't do that.
By modifying the boot.ini he is going to get stuck in a loop of safe mode
error > reboot >safe mode > error > reboot.

Just my experience with editing the boot.ini to get to safe mode when you
are already having problems getting to safe mode.

Check your event veiwer and see if you can see what error happened while
trying to get to safe mode. Fix the problem then try again.

By the way, why do you need to get to safe mode?

I'm having trouble uninstalling a program (CD Stomper) and their tech guys
told me to go into safe mode and try to uninstall and then install.

Click star tthen run and type eventvwr.msc then press enter.

Do you see any errors under system or application? If so please give us the
most recent ones. What I need to see is the Event ID and the Source. That
will help us to figure out why you are getting the error going into safe mode.

And just as an aside, if the OP has an old version of Nero's InCD and
SP2, this has been known to cause the issue of not being able to get
into Safe Mode. The solution is to either uninstall InCD if he doesn't
use it or upgrade it from Nero's website.
