Win XP Pro Fax Doesn't Track Anything

Then Microsoft has not been able to reproduce this problem. So far, there
have been only sporadic reports with no one able to provide consistent steps
to repro.

Russ, I don't have NIS installed on my computer. Almost wish I did so I could rectify this problem as per John Miller's fix in this thread. I have McAfee's VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus and Privacy Service installed on my computer. I'll be getting rid of McAfee's Privacy Service once my trial period is up come the middle of May. I searched McAfee's web site to see if this is an issue with their software but came up with no references to this problem. I even checked their forums and came up with nothing. I checked & posted in Dell's forums as well. Some users posted the same problem but we did not get a solution
It's odd because the problem not only stems from NIS software but something else as well

Thanks again
Jill

I know. And we're waiting for someone to tell us the steps to repro.

I also want to note that my fax monitor did not work from the very beginning. I purchased my computer close to 3 months ago from Dell so the problem is not from a program that I installed afterwards but rather from something that came installed on my computer, I suppose
Like I said in my previous posts, the fax monitor has only worked on two occasions, out of the blue. The most recent being the other day. Then just as mysteriously, it stopped working the next day when I started up my computer. Maybe (if and when) the next time it decides to work or pop up I won't shut down my computer in the evening.

Just so I'm clear, the Fax Console works fine but the Fax Monitor only works
sporadically? Anything in Event Viewer?

Yes, that's correct but the console remains static. I have to close it then reopen it to see that my fax was sent successfully
With the event viewer, do I look under application or system? I don't see anything pertaining to Fax under the "source" column in either the application or system folder. I do see information, error & warnings under the "type" column

Then, unfortunately we have nothing to go on. We'd have to log a
transmission to see what's going on, and that' s a pretty labor intensive
task.

I uninstalled McAfee's Privacy Service today as well as removing and reinstalling "fax services" from the "add/remove components" in the control panel (this I have done twice before to no avail as to getting the fax monitor to work)
In any event, lo & behold, my fax monitor is working today! I don't know if removing Privacy Service or reinstalling fax services rectified this problem.
I'm almost afraid to turn off my computer tonight for fear that the fax monitor won't work again when I start my computer tomorrow.
I just wanted to keep you updated on this recent turn of events

Thanks

Let me know if it continues to work. I thought that was one of the causes we
had already identified.

You might want to make sure the modem you are using is compatible
with Windows XP if you haven't already. The list of modems certified by Microsoft
is at this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/default.aspx?

Russ,

Just wanted to let you know that my fax monitor is working for 4 days in a
row now after uninstalling McAfee's Privacy Service on 5/7. Had to of been
the culprit all along.
Anyway, I now have a problem receving faxes. I get a "attempt to receive a
fax has failed" & "an error occured while receiving a fax" messages. I have
a Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem on my computer after updating my driver.
Prior to the driver update I had a Conexant SmartHSFi V.9x 56K DF PCI Modem
on my computer. I was unable to receive with either of these modems. At one
time I did have BVRP's Fax Tools software installed when I was having
problems with the fax monitor and I did receive a fax on one occasion, had
no problem. I was wondering is there some sort of adjustment or setting that
I can make or change in order to recive faxes with Fax Console?

This will be a tough one to solve. Windows XP Fax is very intolerant of many
modems and will throw this error message with modems not on the Windows XP
HCL list (and even some that are). So Victor's suggestion is spot on.
If your modem is on the HCL list, then the problem is most likely from
setting the other fax program wrote to the modem and did not relinquish.
Windows XP Fax does not work well when other fax software has been
installed.

Thank you Victor & Russ. Sorry I haven't posted sooner but yes my modem is on the HCL list. I wanted to let you know that my problem is now fixed! I had a defective modem. I connect to the internet with DSL so I was not aware that my modem was defective. (Makes me wonder when I updated my modem driver a couple of months ago if that caused my modem to become defective) Anyway, Dell sent me a replacement modem last week. I can now receive faxes with no problem. My fax monitor is still working too, ever since I uninstalled McAfee's Privacy Service.
Thanks for all of your help

Take care
Jill
