Win XP or Vista for Core 2 Duo system

I've a core 2 duo system running Window XP SP2. I'm told that XP is not
design to use of each core to run individual application, is this thrue?

Do I need to upgrade to Window Vista in order to benefit from the duo core?

No that's not true. Both XP Home and Pro can see multiple cores on the same
chip. XP Pro is needed for multiple processors. With Vista, Basic and Home
Premium can see multiple cores on a single processor. Business, Enterprise
and Ultimate is needed to utilize multiple processors.

One thing to add, don't think in terms of "Multiple Processors". Microsoft
licensing is keyed to the "Physical" package CPU. While Core/Core 2 Duo
is a Multiprocessor - it exists in a single module (Chip).

XP home is limited to a single CPU package. XP Professional supports a
true/physical multi-processor system where there is two CPU sockets on
the motherboard.

On programs, there aren't that many applications written to take advantage
of Multiprocessor threading, but that is changing.
