win XP network card disappeared

I have a question about my network card not showing up in my devices or
anywhere. Awhile ago my onboard (ECS) NIC card disappeared. The network
connection worked but it's not there, listed anywhere (it use to be there).
Then windows would tell me that my firewall was not running. I'm can't
change it since I have no NIC device showing. Recently, I've turned on the
computer to no network connection. That was fine, I added a new card. WinXP
(pro) said I added a new card, said what card it was, installed the drivers,
said it's ready, and nothing. There was no device listed. When I try and
reinstall it, WinXP doesn't list a NIC as devices installed. Try adding it
and nothing works to add this or another card I tried.
Anyone have an idea what I can try to get one card to work? even show up.
Thanks

Did you disable the on-board NIC in the BIOS?

The bio's are not changed. If they were I'd not get it to work sometimes.
And I don't believe that would not affect the NIC card I added. :( Thanks.
