Win XP locks up -- must reboot

We have two computers that have Win XP Home installed as
an upgrade from Win Me, and both tend to lock up and
require a reboot -- can't get the Task Manager or any
reaction from Ctrl+Alt+Del. At one time I suspected
Outlook, but today it locked up after booting up and
there were no apps running yet. My wife's business PC
was getting worse and since she emptied Outlook's deleted
folder, it is running much better. I've used Win NT and
Win 2000 at work for years and have never seen anything
like this. Any ideas, anyone?

Scan with a current (post-2002 version using updated definitions) on all
computers. If computers are networked, disconnect from network first.
This is symptomatic of virus infection, probably Klez or Yaha.
