Hello,

After cleaning up the computer from tons of spyware, the Search -> Search
for files and folders dialog got apparently coorupted. Left side bar with
search parameters dialog disappeared. Only the dog is playing there as
usual... verything else seems to work fine.

How can I get the search functionality back?

Thank you very much in advance,
D.P.

DP,

Click Start/Run and type:

regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll

If this does not help,

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll
(If Windows is installed in C:\ )

-or simply type-

regsvr32 /i %Systemroot%\Srchasst\srchui.dll

You'll see a dialog box like this:

---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in C:\WINDOWS\Srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
--------------------------

Hello,

Thank you, Ramesh, it is definitely something about that.
The regsvr32 approach didn't work (it displays the correct message, but
nothing happens).
Installation of Srchasst.inf brought me a little further. It asked for the
missing files (like msgr3en.dll, nls302en.lex, etc.) which I located and
submitted (which was not a trivial by itself, as search didn't work :), and
the installation seemed to complete successfully. However, no changes again
in Search for Files or Folders - still the left pane is empty. Also, Edit
menu won't open there.

Any further ideas on the recovery? Hope for you help...

Thank you,
D.P.

Hi D.P.

Does this happen in a normal folder view? And let's know if you're using Classic Search for Search Companion.

Hello,

No, that happens only in the search window. I am not sure what is Classic
Search, but I definitely don't use Seqarch Companion. Just plain search.

Also, I tried to uninstall SP2. That didn't help. I installed it again. That
didn't help either.
Now I am in a process of doing an "Upgrade Install" from Windows XP CD. If
that doesn't help, I would haveno more ideas, and rely only on your help.

Thank you,
D.P.

D.P,

Windows 2000 style search (Use Search Asst registry value to "no")

Good luck on repair installation, and keep us posted the result.

regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll - this didn't work, but
regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll works fine :)
