Win XP Home - Simple File Sharing Problem

D

Dick Sutton

I just realized that I am missing something very important in my
understanding of 'Simple File Sharing' in Windows XP Home. I have a small
Office LAN of 5 computers running XP Home and SFS. We just decided to have
user place files in a 'networked shared' location (Shared Documents) for
periodic collection. In other words, I created a folder in the Shared
Documents folder and set the Shared Documents folder to allow network
sharing (level 5). I did this under the Admin account. I know the folder
is network shared because the icon of the hand under the folder shows up if
I go to My Computer.

The problem is, when one of the users (a Limited account) is logged on and
places a file in the said folder, I can't copy the folder from another
machine. If I go to the users machine while she is still logged on, the
Shared Documents folder does not have the sharing icon indicated. If I log
her off and log on as an admin, the sharing icon is back.

I was not aware that network shares (level 4 & 5) were logon specific. How
do I set up the shares of all users that may have an account on the machine
when I don't have their passwords? I want to set them up such that I can
periodically run a script (VBS) on another machine and collect all the files
that have been placed in this special shared directory.

Thanks in advance...

Lets try...

1st - Only Admin privileges users can manage the share, so, common users
cannot see the properties of a share.

2nd - When you share a folder you have set the permissions of this, by
default this is read only share and you cannot copy nothing to this - do a
share using the button "PERMISSIONS" and set it to everyone or an specific
group to WRITE.

Maybe help...

Fabiano,
Thanks for the response.

Comment #1: yes I know that Admin's only can manage the share, but it seems
that the share isn't even available when a Limited user is logged on. If I
have the Limited user set up a share on the folder, then my collection
script works. I just don't want to have to get with every individual and
have them set up a share. That seems to be a ridiculous requirement.

Your comment #2 appears to be for Win XP Pro and therefore doesn't apply to
me.

Thanks again,

Dick

Try this:
Start in Safe Mode, login as an admin and set the security for the
shared folder so that the Users group has full control permissions for it.

Thanks Steve,
I give your advice a try. I thought that an Admin setting a 'share' was
good across all users attempting to access the share remotely. There's
something I'm missing here, but I don't know what it is. Maybe I'm just
getting old...

I am no expert is Simple File Sharing, I don't use XP Home and I always
turn it off in Pro, it was just a thought that might help you get around
whatever glitch SFS has tossed your way.

Another thought is you might check the status of the Guest account,
since that is used for SFS.
