Win XP Home shutdown problem and update issue

Hey People.

Have a system with Win XP Home and I'm having two issues.

1) It hangs when during Shutdown / Restarts at the 'Windows is Shutting
Down' screen. I can't leave that screen. Ctrl+Alt+Dlt does nothing. I have to
do a hard shutdown.
2) When I try to go to the windows update page if just gives me a blank
window. I can go to any other web page just fine.

I have downloaded SP2. I have AOL 9.0 installed.

I have restored back to a previous point, before SP2 and AOL, and things are
fine. I can Shutdown / Restart and get updates from the Windows Update site.
I can reinstall SP2 and have no issues. I put AOL on and I'm still cool. I
finish getting the latest updates and restart and I seemed fine. So I get
ready to shutdown the system and it hangs again!!! I checked and guess
what... I can't get to the WIndows update page. Is there an issue with one of
the latest updates that would cause this??

I know I'll be told to kill AOL, but this is my daughters computer and AOL
does have a great kids interface and parental controls. Yes, I tryed all of
the above with an admin logon.

Any help??

Thanks in advance.

AOL?
The cause of the problem was the AOL Internet Safety signon feature I had
turned on a couple of weeks ago to protect/monitor the kids. Turned it off
and like magic.

[[Correspondent Ron Spruell found that disabling the Terminal Services
service reduced his shutdown time from over 2 minutes (hanging at the
“Windows is shutting down” screen) to about 10 seconds. To disable Terminal
Services, follow the steps in the prior paragraph for launching
SERVICES.MSC. Please note that Terminal Services is required in Windows XP
for running Remote Assistance, Fast User Switching, and (in XP Pro) Remote
Desktop.]]

My computer taking 10-15 minutes to shut down after SP2 installation. This
ohly occurs after using EARTHLINK email software. And it only happens when
the administrator (me) is operating, my limited user has no problem when she
is using EARTHLINK for her email.. I read on
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php that a user had success modifying their
NVIDIA software, but I do not understand why my limited user is not having
shutdown delay. We are both using the same software.
