win xp hibernation

I have win xp pro with P4 3.2 GHz and 2Gb RAM , SP3
my C drive is 66% full
at times when I shut it down with shift button pressed to hibernate - it
does not
the screen goes blank at some point (in the beginning or in the middle ) and
it stays blank but CPU fan is still working
it is not stand by because I have to restart it to use it again
any thoughts?
 
Before going into hibernation, shut down one process/program at a time till
you find the causing program/process.

so it is a process which still running and does not want to end?
