Win XP Hangs on "Welcome" Message

My Win XP Professional hangs on the welcome message when I boot.The HD runs
but I have waited 5 minutes and the desktop will not launch.I can do
ctl-alt-del and it proceeds normally.Even so the total boot time is very
long.

Any ideas/advice is certainly appreciated.

Hi Bob,

Run a complete Chkdsk at Boot.

Go into My Computer. Right-click the drive containing your operating
system and click Properties. Click Tools Click Check Now. Check both
options. Click Start. Click Yes to Schedule. Reboot and let Chkdsk run.

I followed your procedure and it fixed the problem,now it boots and quickly
too.
