Win XP computer Disconnects (Dialup)

Hello, I am dealing with a WinXP machine that disconnects from the
dialup connection and dials another number which is not listed in the
dialer under alternates. The dialer has been deleted/recreated and not
helping. Any suggestions?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

In your case, I would answer the Second Question first.

Malware is the most likely suspect.
It might be of some interest to determine what the number is, and talk to
the phone company. Many of the malware numbers are intended to generate
billing via the phone company. I do not recommend specific software
packages. There are fairly good freeware apps available that will usually
remove dialers and other malware.
