Win Update for Intel 82845G graphics caused serious error/blue screen o'death

WU brought up 2 updates for my XP Home Dell, one of which was
specifically for Dell with Intel 82845G graphics chip. Upon restart I
got the ol' BSOD with physical memory dump, etc. It said that
ialmdev5.dll caused the fault. I rebooted in Safe Mode and deleted the
most recent version of it, then upon another safe reboot, my display
was stuck in 4-bit 640x480. Had to d/l a new driver from the actual
Intel website, all is fine now.

WU should remove this update.

It is NOT in your best interest to update hardware drivers from the
Microsoft Windows Update site. Always get drivers from the manufacturer of
the hardware. Period. So go to Dell and/or Intel.

Then why are they offered by MS WU in the first place? It seems
ridiculous that something that MS is sending down the line is
something that is going to cause a problem. I stand by what I said
earlier, that MS should remove this (and ergo this type of) material
from WU if it is going to be a problem for people. I have had a fair
amount of experience getting around Windows and PC in general so I at
least was able to figure it out and get around it, I'd hate to think
what someone with no experience or a more "senior" user would go
through after this process.
