I can no longer open my control panel. when I do, windows explorer
restarts. this has been happening for a while now and just started out of
the blue. I cant find any fixes for this. Can anybody help?? thnx in
advance.

Make sure that you are malware free. See below.

<quote>
To determine if this is caused by a browser extension (also loads with
explorer.exe processes), disable the tool bands and Browser Helper Objects:

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.

Open Control Panel, or folder window and observe the behavior. If the
problem persist, undo the above setting. Try ShellExView to determine if a
shell extension is causing the problem.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Using ShellExView, disable all the third-party extensions (non-Microsoft),
and restart.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

I have tried all of the above mentioned. Still getting the same problem.
Any other ideas on this?

*.cpl files are Control Panel files.

Test for a Corrupt Control Panel File.

Do a Search for files or folders named box, type *.cpl.

In the list of found files, double-click a ".cpl" file under Name.

The corresponding Control Panel item opens. For example, when you
double-click Inetcpl.cpl, the Internet Properties dialog box appears. In
addition, when you double-click a file such as Inetcpl.cpl a problem may
occur, if one does you can then figure out which .cpl file may be corrupt.

If no error occurs, close the Control Panel item. And double click the next
one. Until you have opened all of the .cpl files.

wscui.cpl = SP2 Windows Security Center.

igfx.cpl does not look like something that you want, delete igfx.cpl.

But before you delete igfx.cpl, what folder is igfx.cpl in?

But before you delete igfx.cpl...

Right click igfx.cpl | Click Properties | Click the Version tab

There should be a description on both General and Version tabs.

This info is part of the file and not all files have real good info.
Especially if it is spyware or a virus. Or whoever put it together was lazy
or secretive.

On the Version tab.

Click a category on the left to display the information on the right.

Other version information
Item Name:
Company
File Version
Internal Name
Language
Original File Name
Product Name
Product Version

Sometimes, if someone was really industrious, there is info under the
Summary tab also.

16-bit programs do not have a Version tab.

You can copy and paste information from the igfx.cpl Properties.

I would be really curious as to what you find. Anything that you find about
igfx.cpl may help someone else.

After deleting all copies of igfx.cpl, if you have more than one, try
opening the Control Panel. If you still get an error because of wscui.cpl,
we can see about fixing that.

A thought, you might try rebooting after deleting igfx.cpl and then try
opening the Control Panel.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe

Glad that Control Panel works now.

However, if you deleted wscui.cpl, you will be unable to open the Windows
Security Center.

I have SP1 so I do not have a copy of wscui.cpl or I would attach it.

If you had SP2 included with your XP install see if there is a file named
wscui.cp_ on your XP CD.

Or see if there is a file named wscui.cp_ anywhere on your machine.

wscui.cp_ is a compressed version of wscui.cpl and it can be expanded to
wscui.cpl. But we need to know if you have a wscui.cp_ somewhere.

A ServicePackFiles folder with an I386 folder maybe.

I had deleted those files, I saw they were probably for my onboard video,
which I have a seperate video card. Then I restarted, opened control
panel about 100 times and it worked fine every time. I thank you very
much. Never thought id get this problem fixed.

igfx.cpl does not look like something that you want, delete igfx.cpl.

Or whoever put it together was
lazy
or secretive.

On the Version tab.

Click a category on the left to display the information on the right.

Other version information
Item Name:
Company
File Version
Internal Name
Language
Original File Name
Product Name
Product Version

Sometimes, if someone was really industrious, there is info under the
Summary tab also.

16-bit programs do not have a Version tab.

You can copy and paste information from the igfx.cpl Properties.

I would be really curious as to what you find. Anything that you find
about
igfx.cpl may help someone else.

After deleting all copies of igfx.cpl, if you have more than one, try
opening the Control Panel. If you still get an error because of
wscui.cpl,
we can see about fixing that.

A thought, you might try rebooting after deleting igfx.cpl and then try
opening the Control Panel.

Ok, did that and most open up fine. There are a couple that have an
error
come up...."an exception occurred when trying to run
shell32.dll,Control_runDLL". The 2 that say that are called; igfxcpl
and wscui. I'm not to sure what these are, but would love to know how
to fix this. I have tried to do a windows repair with my windows CD
but it says it is an older version. (I installed SP2 from microsoft
updates and my disk is SP1). Thank you for your help so far.

In addition, when you double-click a file such as Inetcpl.cpl a
problem may occur, if one does you can then figure out which .cpl file
may be corrupt.

If no error occurs, close the Control Panel item. And double click the
next
one. Until you have opened all of the .cpl files.

Make sure that you are malware free. See below.

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
