Explorer shuts down when I open Control Panel

Every time I open control panel in windows xp sp2, Explorer sguts down and
restarts. I cannot access anything in control panel unless I search for it
in help, then click the link found in the help. Has been doing this for a
long time now and just started out of the blue. If anybody can help me with
fixing this problem, it would be very much apreciated.
