When launched, Win Explorer by default expands the My Documents folder.
I do not keep any docs in that folder and find myself having to collapse it
in every new Win Explorer window.
Can the default expansion be cancelled?

OK. Where would you like it to open?
Since you didn't state a preference on a starting point, you
might want to take a look at these articles:

Exellent! Thanks very much! Win Explorer now expands the My Computer folder
in the Folders pane as I wished.
Is there now (additionally) a way to have the Desktop folder
default-selected, so that my desktop shortcuts were to appear 'automatically'
in the right-hand pane?

If you've got Explorer opening to My Computer, you can simply
hit the Backspace key to move up one level to show your Desktop
in the right hand pane. If you want to have explorer open to
your Desktop, enter the following in the Target line of the
Windows Explorer shortcut's properties.

explorer /e,/select,

Make sure to include the trailing comma.

Good luck
