Change default Win Explorer screen

Win XP with SP2

When I open Windows Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and
selecting "Explore", the window opens up and the file highlighted is

C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Start Menu

with all the associated folder structure expanded out totally. So, I always
have to go in and collapse everything.

Is there any way to have this default open with all folder structure in the
collapsed state? Thanks.

Not really, that's what exploring is. You could select Open instead of Explore. That way it will just open the folder without
using the Explorer pane.

That link on the Start Button right click is to make changes in the Start menu folder heirarchy. If you just want to open Windows Explorer, you can place a convenient shortcut on the Start menu. Open Start/All Programs/Accessories and find the shortcut to Windows Explorer. Right click the shortcut and select the "Pin to start menu" option. This will place the shortcut at the top/left setion of the Start button menu.

That applies to almost everything in Explorer and in Start Menu. You are
thinking that it will open the default explorer but no no, it will expore
the Start Menu. There are more explore shortcuts in the items in start
menu, if you click them, explorer will explore them. The real thing you
want is the EXPLORER. You can get it by making a shortcut that points to
explorer.exe
Simple steps :
1.Enable Quick launch by right clicking taskbar > Toolbars > Quick Lunch3.Right click empty space in the folder > New > Shortcut
4.Enter "explorer.exe" without quotes as the Target and follow steps....

If you want to open a certain folder with that shortcut then enter this in
target :
%windir%\explorer.exe /e,c:\windows
Replace c:\windows with the path you want....

I think that will solve your problem that is not really a problem, just a
misunderstanding...
