Win+E Default Location

Allen Evans

How do i modify the default location opened by windows
explorer when i use the Win+E keyboard shortcut. At the
moment it opens to "my documents" and i want it to open to
"my computer", because i really dislike the "my documents"
folder.

thanks in advance

Allen,

No.

There is no registry-tweak or user-interface procedure to do that.

Actually, I think there may be a workaround ... at least I have one that
seems to work.

Create a shortcut to %windir%\explorer.scf Place the shortcut on the
desktop, Accessories folder, or wherever it's convenient for you (I use
the Quick Launch toolbar). Select Properties for the new shortcut icon,
'Shortcut' tab, put your cursor in the 'Shortcut key' box and press 'E'.
It should then read 'Ctrl + Alt + E'. Apply and OK your way out of
there and, from then on, clicking WinKey+E should bring you to My
Computer instead of My Documents.

As I said ... it works for me ...

? Explorer opens in MY COMPUTER here when using WIN + E, however, I
cannot tell what I should have done to change the default behaviour.

| Bit different, Jason. No workaround has been found for what the OP is
| asking and the same goes for right clicking the Start button/Explore.

Hi Kelly,

As Thorsten points out, [Win]+[E] *does* give "My Computer", which is what the OP wants, but instead gives "My Documents".

The OP has an interesting problem.

FredP,

Normally, [Win]+[E] *does* give "My Computer".

Are you saying that [Win]+[E] gave you "My Documents" instead of "My Computer"?

Thorsten,

Yes, normally Explorer opens in MY COMPUTER when using WIN + E.

However, there is no registry-tweak nor user-interface procedure to change the default behaviour of WIN + E.

The OP has an interesting problem.

Yup, that's what I'm saying.

I can't say, though, that the 'workaround' was the result of any
original thought on my part ... rather that I had the same situation and
found an answer in the newsgroups a couple of months ago that worked for
me. And, that's what I posted in my previous answer.

Interesting, though, that some users say that they go right to My
Computer with Win-Key+E, and others report going to My Documents. I
have no idea as to why ...

Fred,

Interesting.

I am on XP Pro SP1 (OEM).

Are you on SP1a ?
