Win 98 to XP direct connect

Hi everyone,

I've been doing this all day and I'm stuck. I've read
through the message board but can't find any help.

I'm trying to transfer files from a Win98 laptop to a
WinXP desktop. I have set up a parallel cable connection
(4mbps rate) between the two via direct cable, but I
can't actually figure out how to transfer the files. None
of the commercially available programs I've been able to
find on download.com can help. I'd use the windows file
transfer wizard but I can't use the same wizard from
win98 -- I don't know where it is.

I just want to backup my laptop to my desktop. Please
help, any help is appreciated.

You cannot use a regular cable, it needs to be a crossover cable to make the
connection.

File and settings transfer wizard is to save your settings to reinstall
after you've install XP. As an FYI, it can be run on a 98 machine. Just
copy fastwiz.exe to a floppy.

Hi,

thank you for your fast response. I am using a crossover
cable, CAT5e. It establishes the connection, but I can't
figure out how to actually bring the files from the Win98
laptop to the WinXP one. I try to set it up as a network
connection but it just doesn't find the other computer.

I can also establish a separate LPT1 connection but that
doesn't work either. The connection is there, but I can't
actually transfer any files.

Your CAT5 crossover is the best way.
Share a folder on the PC you want to transfer the files from. On the PC you
want to transfer to, open Run and type \\computername\sharename, replace
computername and sharename with the actual names. Then simply drag and
drop.
