Win 2K repair mess

Started this morning missing ntoskrnl.exe from boot folder.

Ran a repair from not quite current Emergancy Repair Disk

On boot, Nortons and MS Word try to launch installers linked to obsolete
file locations.

Tried to uninstall Nortons, but could uninstall grayed out

Tried to repair Office 2003 Pro, but packet was not recognized

Ran Windows update and found 23 critical updates (?)

I've been through the two hour total win 2k update before so I blindly hit
the restall button and then the restart button.

Got an error message saying "The Microsoft VM you are attempting to install
is a protected system component and can only be updated with a later release
of the operating system or service pack."

Closed box and ran update again. Java script would not work. Dialogue box
would read "checking for updates' then move to the screen reading "scan for
updates", but the button was unresponsive. Clicking the "scan" hotlink from
the side menu returned scan=true

Tried rebooting, no effect.

Went to the uninstall software and no text would display, only small icons.
Scrolled down to the last hotfix item without knowing for sure what number it
was, and removed it.

After rebooting, add/remove software dialogue returned to normal and scan
for updates returned to normal.

After trying updates again, it seems that KB816093 (Virtual Machine) will
not load at all, and KB 889293 gums everything up.

So...what other info do you need?

With some problem machines you reach a point where you need to
decide if it is worth persisting or if a complete rebuild would be more
effective. You may have reached this point.

To avoid the agony on future occasions, take an image of your system
disk once every six months, and keep the two most recent copies.
Products such as DriveImage, Ghost or Acronis will to it quite nicely.
This reduces a repair effort to something that lasts less than one hour,
with a guaranteed outcome. Note that it relies on you splitting your disk
into one drive for OS & Applications (drive C:) and one drive for your
data (drive D:).

That happened to me yesterday evening where I was trying to load a update
and the button was unresponsive. Come to think of it I think it was the one
you mentioned the jvm update. I closed the browser and reopened it. It
then worked. I then tried to install a number of security updates MDAC
included. Of about 25, 5 failed. At that point I decided to install ONE AT
A TIME. After about 6 hrs I got them all in. Because I rebooted after each
one.

So the moral of the story is it may not be your fault. What was KB889293?
You can always download them to your machine and install them locally. You
use the Personalize Windows Update in menu on left | check Display the link
to the Windows Update Catalog | Save Settings.

Then in that you will search by number 889293 and you can download it and
install locally.

I had one Windows 2000 Prof machine fail to boot - it would boot, then
BSOD, then cycle through same process. I could boot in safe mode and it
would not BSOD.

As it turns out, this error was related to Kernel Stack Space being very
low or running out. This was related to the Intel Application
Accelerator being out of date on that machine. I installed the latest
IAA from Intel in safe mode, rebooted and the machine worked perfectly.
I was amazed, as I was ready to format/reinstall :)

I've only seen the machine fault due to KB889293 due to the IAA issue.
