Here are the minimum system requirements for running the Windows® 2000
Professional operating system.
Minimum Requirements
Computer/Processor 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
Memory At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM; more memory generally improves
responsiveness.
Hard Disk 2 GB with 650 MB free space.
CPU Support Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems.
Drive CD-ROM or DVD drive.
Display VGA or higher resolution monitor.
Keyboard Required.
Even Win98 doesn't perform well with only 32MB, Win2K might bootup but
that's probably as far as you'll get. I'm not even sure Win2K setup will
let you install without the minimum RAM. With RAM so cheap what's
preventing you from adding more?
Just for the hell of it, I gave it a try on an old clunker
than normally gathers dust in a storage room.
Wouldn't even install with only 32 MB.
Popped out the 32 MB DIMM and put it a 128 MB DIMM.
Installed OK.
Swapped the DIMMs again to get back to 32 MB - and it
refused to boot.
I had no other small DIMMs on hand so I couldn't test
with 64 MB.
And now that I've gotten that old clunker out of the
storage room and I've blown all the dust out and verified
it still works, I'm off to a local "for sale" newsgroup to
see if I can get enough for it to buy a six pack ;-)
Well.... despite all the doubters, and unsuccessful
atempts of my peers... IT WORKED!!!!!!
I was able to install win2kpro, download all updates and
service packs, and install McAfee and Office. All with
32 measily MB of RAM and a 266 MHz processor. Its
slower than christmas, but it works!!!!!
