Hi,

I have two PCs, both running Windows 2000, and I also have a
cross-over cable. I need to connect the two computers so I can
transfer files from the old PC to the new one. I would appreciate if
somebody explained in simple terms how to accomplish this from start
to finish. Thanks.

1. Via the Control Panel / System / Network Identification, set the
"Workgroup" name of both machines to the same value, e.g.
"HomeGroup", "Workgroup", "MyGroup".

2. Via the Control Panel / Network / Local Area Connection /
Internet Protocol, set the IP address of PC1 to 192.168.0.1
and that of PC2 to 192.168.0.2. Make the subnet mask
255.255.255.0 for both, and don't worry about the rest.
Test your settings by starting a Command Prompt, then
typing this command on PC1: ping 192.168.0.2.
If you have a firewall bundled with your virus scanner then
you may have to turn it off.

3. Via "My Computer", create shares for the folders you wish
to access via the network. Make sure that everyone has
full access to these shares.

4. Create identical accounts JDoe / SomePassword on each PC.
Use this account when logging on.

5. Launch "My Computer", then select "Map network drive".
You type a specific address, e.g. \\PC2\SomeShare.
