To be able to see the blue screen stop message; Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery, I usually like to uncheck
"Automatically reboot" this way you get a chance to read the stop error.
If no BSOD's occur (Event ID: 1001 Source: Save Dump), then it may be a
power problem. I would look at a possible faulty (or undersized) pc power
supply, UPS, bad battery, or the circuit feeding the outlet that the pc is
plugged into.

| Anyone have any ideas on why windows 2000 would restart
| by itself once in a while?
I had simeller problem with my pc and the problem was the
following two things:
1- there was a problem with my AGP card.
2- there was a problem with my power supply.
1- the AGP card was kind of damaged it makes the PC stop
responding for so many times and.
2- there was a problem with some pices of my power supply.
Now after changing the AGP and the power supply every
thing seems to work very well.
From my experience, It is normally a bad power supply, or a noncapable power
supply. The most recent experience I have had with a problem like that was
corrupted files for the Microsoft UPS service. That crashed this computer.
Running 2000 server as a DC at home can be a pain to get working, especially
when you actually care about what's on it (unlike servers at work).
It could be caused by a fatal error (bluescreen).
To better track this kind of error:
1. Right-click My Computer > Advanced > Startup and Recovery
2. Clear the checkbox for "Automatically reboot"
3. In "Write Debugging Information", choose the option for a "Complete
Memory Dump"
4. Click OK twice
5. Reboot the machine
