Win 2000 laptop connection to win xp home desktop

I'm trying to connect a win2000 prof laptop which is set
up for a work domain into my winxp home edition machine
via wireless connection. The physical connection is fine
but the laptop can't find the home computer or establish
internet connection. I have accounts set up on the home
machine with the same name and password as the laptop.
Also have set workgroup up on home machine with same name
as laptop configured domain. Any help appreciated.

having the same problem - linksys hardware connection
is fine ( unlike you, can see internet on laptop), but
although desktop appears in network neiborhood on
laptop , can not "see" it - \\network path not found
on desktop, can't even view the workgroup after
ceating it -> get workgroupname not accessible. you
may not have permission. frustrating as this is just a
very basic set-up I'm trying to do -> a 'new' Dell
desktop with windows xp to an 'old' Dell laptop with
windows 2000. ( have tried a number of things from
knowledgebase - thought turning on netbios over tcp/ip
would fix xp side, but it didn't ).As you are aware,
creating a set-up disk in xp to use in windows 2000
does not play, so not sure what to do on the 2000 side.

Hi Guys,

Am having a similar problem. I have 2 laptops with w2k
pro and xp pro in a workgroup called workgroup - no
domain. I can access the w2k laptop from the xp laptop,
as both laptops have the same password for the
administrator account. I can however access the xp laptop
from the w2k laptop. Just to add the this problem 5 of my
customers have the same problem. I'm sorry I can't
suggest anything but I thought it might help if you know
your not alone.

I had this problem and solved it by changing the mtu value in the
registry:

Added the registry parameter:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{whatever_id_matches_your_wireless_nic}]

"MTU"=dword:00000514

The 514 (hex) corresponds to 1300 bytes decimal. The default is 1500.
The fragmentation of the packets was not working correctly.

You can also look in the software for your wireless nic to see if they
provide the option to change this value (MTU or packet size or
fragmentation) there and then you might not have to touch the
registry.

Good luck.
