Win 2000. Cannot retrieve Updates

Running Windows 2000 v 5.0, build 2195, SP4.
Cannot download critical updates from Microsoft update
site. Progress sticks at "checking for latest version of
Windows Update Software" screen.
Also problems in updating anti-virus software (Grisoft
AVG).

"Download signed ActiveX Controls", "Run ActiveX and plug-
ins", "Script ActiveX Controls marked safe for scripting"
and "Active Scripting" all enabled.

Help to overcome this problem would be welcome.I presume
that I have been hit by a virus?
 
I would try to use an up to date virus scanner for sure. There are also a
couple of places the do "online" virus scanning for free, at least once.
