Win 2000 and Samsung 160GB HD

I have searched unsuccessfully to the answer to this - any help
appreciated.

I want to install Windows 2000 on a new Samsung SP1614N disk in a new
system I am building. I understand that this is "tricky" but doable -
can somebody *PLEASE* tell me how, and what's tricky about it?
Detailed instructions are welcome!

Before doing this though, I have booted up with an old HD as master
and the new disk as slave on the primary channel. Win 2K can't even
detect the Samsung at all - it doesn't show up in "My Computer", not
even as a smaller disk. I am running W2K Service Pack 1. I know I will
probably need SP4 to see a partition >137GB... but I thought it should
still appear as a smaller disk?

The BIOS supports 48 bit LBA according to "48lbachk" downloaded from
the intel site. BIOS detects the disk and correctly reports it as a
160GB Samsung SP1614N. It is set to AUto. It's an Award BIOS, MSI
865GM2-LS mobo, Pentium 4 2.6 GHz.

The windows Add/Remove Hardware wizard identifies the drive correctly
and says it is working.

I have downloaded HUTIL from Samsung and it says my new disk is fine.

I downloaded Win2k SP4 but have not installed it yet. I got the
Network version (129MB, downloaded using fast connection at work!) but
now I'm not sure of the best way to install it. If I install it on the
W2k installation on the old disk, maybe that will let me see the new
disk, and partition it, and install using my W2k SP1 CD.

Anyway, I am looking forward to some instructions from you
knowledgeable guys.

I am hoping to get this done in the next few days so I can return the
HD if it doesn't work... and maybe get a smaller 120GB drive instead
:-(

My board supports SATA - would a SATA drive be any easier to install?

Thanks greatly in advance.

Refer to the folowing:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;305098

Install SP4 for Windows 2000 Pro. Create the registry value as required.
Check to see if it's seen in Windows Explorer. Partition and format as
required.

Nope, you will not see a new (blank) disk in Explorer. Device/Disk Manager is
the place to look.

Here's an update... I have had some success. I installed SP4 and
created the new EnableBigLba registry entry. After a reboot the new
disk showed up in disk manager. I couldn't partition it though as that
option was greyed out. I was able to give the new disk a name though,
and after a reboot I was able to partition it. This enabled me to
access the disk from windows.

Next step is to install windows on the new disk as the boot disk. To
be safe, I will create a slipstreamed bootable W2k + SP4 installation
disk using the excellent instructions at
http://www.duspinnst.com/bootcd.htm. I have followed most of the
instructions and am ready to burn once I install Nero. This will allow
me to install Wk2 and SP4 at the same time.

thanks for the advice.
