Will Windows boot from L: ?

M

Moggy

My system currently has 3 disk drives with numerous partitions. I have
added a new 8 GB partition to Disk 1 (65 GB, C: boot drive). Partition
Magic assigned L: to the new partition. My plan is to move XP Home and
other essential files to the smaller partition to simplify backups.
Once I've moved XP to L:, will my system boot from L:? If not, what
settings must I change?

This reply has absolutely no relevance or connection to the question
asked. Please refrain from answering just to answer, it does not help.

The answer is No, you cannot move Windows XP from it's designated
drive letter to another drive. Internal pointers, Registry keys and many
other things prevent this.

To accomplish what you seek, without a XP reinstall you can move
User data, Pagefile, DllCache, ServicePackFiles and some others to an
alternate partition or disk which would effectively lower the size of the
XP instance.

But your information is not presented as a suggestion, but rather as an
answer. Most posters to this newsgroup will not know what they are
looking for and accept your "suggestion" as an answer. It is important
to remember that most posters in this particular newsgroup are not
tech-savvy and need precise answers. If you don't know the answer to a
problem, then either don't post a reply or tell the OP clearly that you
aren't sure but s/he might look at (insert url) for a possible
solution. You want to be careful not to send the OP on a wild goose
chase so make sure your suggested links are germane; most posters are
very frustrated already and want a clear-cut solution.

Yes, very nicely stated. Hopefully Andre will understand the importance of
posting with valid information, not a shot in the dark that may or may not
work. The real problem with Andre is he sounds so credible but is giving
advice that can potentially destroy a users system. A suggestion is fine,
but qualify the advice as a suggestion and a backup should be in place if
the advise if tried.

You can't do it by moving files. What you can do is 'clone' a partition
into free space. Or better in this case if I understand your
intentions, Move files you do *not* want out of C: and then use a
third party program to shrink C: to the size you want. For that (or
clone copying) I would use BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35
shareware - 30 day full functional trial) - boot its generated floppy,
cancel install to enter Maintenance, and then take Partition Work
You can then highlight C and Resize it down. And back it up by
highlighting and Imaging, either Pasting the image as a new partition in
free space, or as a set of files in one of the other partitions.

Thanks. I'll try moving unwanted files out of C:, then gradually shrink
C: with Partition Magic. I looked at Bootit and found it to be too
"geeky," at least the manual. It's probably a fine application that
would be more popular if they cared enough to make it more user-friendly.
