Will repairing Windows XP mess up installed apps?

I would like to repair Windows XP Media Center on my PC. Will "repairing"
it mess up already installed applications and settings?

Thanks.

Hi,

A repair installation should not affect any installed applications or
settings. However, backing up critical data is still important as a
precaution.

Usually? No... You will need to do all updates again though. Keeping
installed applications and data is one of the key benefits to the repair
installation.

If you don't know how...

Last but not least - just because you're normally okay with it doesn't mean
you shouldn't back up your data first.

Why do you think you should do a repair install?

Major sporatic slowness, etc...

I have run Microsoft Defender Beta 2, ad-ware, spybot, vundofix.exe, etc...
to clean my system. Still doesn't seem to act the same.

I have a very (usually) fast Dell XPS Gen 5 (2 gb RAM, 500 hd, 3+ ghz proc,
etc...) so it's usually quite speedy.

What do you suggest?

THANKS EVERYONE FOR THEIR GREAT RESPONSES SO FAR.... :)

Get rid of the Beta software. Use HijackThis, MSconfig, Task Manager and
check Services (in Computer Management) to see what's loading and
running. Check Event Viewer for errors that might point to something.
Use more than one updated a/v program and scan in Safe Mode. Run Disk
Cleanup, manually delete temp and temporary internet files. Run CHKDSK
/F. Run SFC /Scannow.

Be aware that if your machine has any malware or viruses a repair
install will not help.
