Will Powerpoint do this?

My boss wants me to create an interactive map of the US for the web. I need
to know if powerpoint and any microsoft program will do anything like this.
We are marking specific organizations around the country.

Here's what the map should have/do -- this is all the info that he's given
me...some of it may seem disjointed -- it's all I have at this point.

* Interactive map of the United States for the internet.
* Each state a different color
* Pin points on map - noting organizations (ex. Chicago, Ohio, San
Diego, etc.)
* Dots illuminate
* Map is for the web, but does not have to live on our site
* Shows interconnectedness of the organizations (the specialities)
* Locate each organization
* Show different types of organization in different colors (i.e. state
organization is one color; Metropolitan organization is another color;
Multi-state organization is a third color)
* There's another thing he mentioned about lines connecting the
organization, but I'm lost on that point so let's see if we can make the
other things happen first.

Does anyone know if Powerpoint will do this or if any other program (that's
not expensive) will do it? And how in the world do you do it?

Melissa,

I'm just here asking questions as well, so by no means am I a PP
(PowerPoint) expert. However, I do not think PP will help you on this.

It sounds to me that you need to design a graphic of the US, with all the
things you want. Once done you can create hot spots (in a web designer) that
will allow you to click on area of the mao and link to other pages.

Anyway, hope what little input I gave you helps.

No, PowerPoint cannot be used.

Both Google and Microsoft provide web-based mapping systems that support
programming to do everything that was asked for --HOWEVER-- advanced
JavaScript programming skills are required and neither vendor's mapping
service is free for commercial use.

The basic answer to your question is yes. Is it the best tool for the job?
Maybe not. I think it depends on your level of experience. If you don't use,
or don't have the time to learn how to use, the necessary tools I'd say you
have enough information for a consultant. Otherwise, I agree with David. Take
a look at Google Maps for a start. It's like a box of
chocolates...............TD

Thanks everyone! I'll look into Google maps. I had no idea it had that type
of capabilities.

Yes. This is not a powerpoint project. Use the development tools for
Google maps (see the Memorial Day tribute map...amazing what can be done
with work).
