The computer says that internet explorer is running, but
there is no change in the desktop. There is no homepage
no address bar - nothing. I tried the fixit thingy
in "add/remove" untility of the Control box, but nothing
changes. The tech at Earthlink, which I just started
using just before this problem, said that it sounded like
a Windows ME / Internet Explorer 6.0 conflict. If I try
too much at a time, I get the Blue Screen of Death. Can I
remove the Internet Explorer 6.0 in some way and return to
Internet Explorer 5.O which came with my computer?
Would be delighted with help.

There is no conflict between WinMe and IE6.

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.
