Will not finish installing

I am trying to upgrade my computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP
Professional. No matter how I try to install it - as an upgrade or
formatting the hard drive - it gets stuck at the copying files part. It says
that it cannot copy the file - retry, skip......if you skip windows XP may
not work properly. Check that The CD is in the Disk Drive......Anyone know
why the heck it keeps doing this....I am sick of sitting in front of the
computer trying to figure it out. Need advice how to install
step-by-step.....help!!!

Are the files the same or different?
If different, the CD and/or drive may be dirty or damaged.
Try different of each.
Clean the CD and drive with appropriate cleaning tools designed
specifically fore CDs and their drives.
