Will not boot without cd

I have recently had problems with booting into windows xp home. If I
have the windows xp cd entered in the drive everything is okay as long
as I boot from the cd. If I take it out or boot from one of the hard
drives, I get NTLDR is missing error message on bootup. Anyone have
any thoughts on this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

Is there any floppy disk inside the floppy drive?
If yes, take it out and try to reboot again.

Pls post abck to NG.

Hi,

If you're sure that you do not have a floppy disk in the floppy drive, I
think your OS is upgraded from Win 98.
If yes, try as described below:

If you still get an error that NTLDR is missing during bootup:
If you have FAT32 partitions, it is much simpler than with NTFS.
Just boot with a Win98 floppy and copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files
from the i386 folder of your XP CD to the root of the C:\ drive.

For NTFS:

1.. Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the
installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4.. Enter in the administrator password when requested
5.. Enter in the following commands (X: is replaced by the actual drive
letter that is assigned to the CD ROM drive.
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
6.. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Pls post back to NG for the outcome

I tried your idea using repair for NTFS format. However, I ran into
another problem. My password does not work. I built the system myself
and installed XP home on my own. I didn't enter any password. When I
leave it blank it doesn't work either. After doing some reading, I
round that microsoft created a hidden administrator password on this
version of windows. Any ideas how can successfully use the Repair
function if I can't determine the password. Thanks. Greg A.
