Will FP2000 work with "2002+" extensions on server?

I got a web hoster that claims they have "Frontpage Extensions 2002+"
(actually they use a penguin OS not Windows Server 200x)
I go to the cpanel for my account and it says FPE is installed.
I can see there are some files created for this.
But when I try to publish via http in FP2000, it protests than
there are no FPE, hence I must try ftp instead.

The instant you publish using ftp:// you corrupt the extensions,
which requires them to be repaired reinstalled.

So, repair reinstall the extensions and then publish using http:// only.

Can you post a link to the site so someone can check to see if extensions are installed?
A link to your homepage is sufficient.

In addition to what Steve says, yes FP 2000 will work with the FP 2002
Server Extensions. The Server Extensions are backwards compatible so that
earlier versions of FP can use them.

at first glance, the _vti* files were there.
Then I looked at KB324843: when I try the shtml.exe (test 4 step 2),
it sayeth:
500 Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request. Please contact the server
administrator, etc.........

moreover, the author.exe (test 4, step 3) gives same error
I tried reinstall extensions - no help
