Will a Word template saved as a doc work okay?

I created a form in Word 2007 with tables so that users of the form can fill
in information with ease. I saved it as a template, and the compatibility box
is checked which is important because the users do not have 2007. However, I
sent the form to someone not using 2007 to test it, and they cannot open the
file.

Finally, I gave up by saving it as a Word doc (instead of as a template) in
compatibility mode so my question is, what happens to the file? In other
words, will the user be able to fill it out as I intended when I created it,
or has saving it as a document, and not a template, made it lose its
functionality and purpose (making it the whole thing null and void)?

Many thanks.

You can't save a template as a document. You can only create new documents
from a template. You can save a document as a template. Does the document
open in Word 2003 if the Office 2007 compatibility options are installed?

Yes, the document opened for the user but not all of the form appears.

For instance, text (in text boxes) is cut off, and I included a graphic with
text in a sidebar on the right hand side of the page which does not display
in 2003. I don't know how to make this work for users that aren't using
2007...

From Word Options > Advanced, go right to the bottom of the list where you
will find compatibility options. Select layout this document as if created
in Word 2003 and see if that helps?
