Is it possible to open a .dotx in Word 2003?

We have downloaded the compatibility and we can open normal docs created in
Word 2007 but not a template. I've created a form for work but some are not
on Word 2007 and when I attempt to save it as a .dot it states that all
fields will be changed to static text and I'll lose the drop down lists, etc.

No, even the compatibility pack doesn't give Word 2003 the ability to open/edit
..dotx or .dotm templates. You'll have to edit them in 2007, remove any content
controls or other items that are new in 2007 and replace them with legacy
controls, and then save them to .dot files.
