will a dual core MB accept a single core cpu?

I am curious if a dual core MB will accept a single core CPU, if it's the
same socket type .

as I see a tremendous price savings in buying a 4Ghz p4 single core CPU,
over a dual core 2Ghz.
Does it depend on the MB?

It depends what cpu's the mobo supports, I dont believe there is such thing
as a dual core specific mobo, excepting where it uses two physical cpu's

You need to consult the operating manual for your motherboard. It will state
which CPU's can be used. The manual should have come with your purchase. If
not it should be avaialble to download from the Internet.
Hope tis helps.

I don't have the MB yet, it's one I was considering buying, I would if the
socket is the same ie 775, then it should accept the single core as the dual
core is the same chip, it just has two cores within it.

I will see what the manufactor says, if anything.

Explain why this belongs in this group? What does this have to do
with XP? What processor your board accepsts has NOTHING to do with
the OS.

Ask elsewhere

Whoaaa! Aren't we touchy!

It looks to me like a legitimate hardware question to ask on the hardware
forum and I found it interesting to read the replies. If you don't like the
question, ignore it.

This person has been doing this for at least a year in a couple groups. Last
winter I asked it to show me where Microsoft describes the group as he likes
to describe it, but it turns out that no official description or 'charter'
exists.

So, he's just making it all up. For what reason, I cannot imagine. If MS had
an issue with topics here, they have the means to deal with it. Otherwise,
it should get the hint and go away. However, it seems undeterred by facts,
hints, or even virtual 2x4's upside the head.

Also, coincidentally or not, it quit posting about the same time school
ended in the early summer. I was away in Aug/Sep and didn't see when it
started back up again.

as an FYI I did some research on that particular MB and discovered as long as
I get revision 2 it will support single core intel p4 CPU.
it's a gigabyte MB specific model I don't remember.
