Since one week and a half, the automatic windows updater
on my XP machine, downloads a patch and ask me to install
the update. At a glance, it looks a lot and raise the
question of what is the level of confidence I can grant
the update service; can it be used to spread viruses
or "spy" softwares?

Any info appreciated.

David;
Anything is possible.
However it is extremely unlikely to get a virus from the Windows
Update website.
You have to trust at some point, if you will not trust that site, you
may as well unplug the computer and never power back on.
That is the only way to stay secure enough without having a little
trust.
