From within IE, click on TOOLS, then on Windows Update.

Manually update from the site.

Hi Slimeliner,
The correct error number is: Error 0x80248009
<MS::>
0x80248009
WU_E_DS_MISSINGREFThe data store is in an invalid state because data that
should be present is missing. This will occur if we try to fetch a linked row
from another table and the linked row does not exist. This can happen with
EULAs, files, and/or localized properties referenced by an update.
</MS::>

This error may occur if there is a content mismatch in the DataStore folder.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

Another step if the above didn't help:
Please copy and paste the following into a Notepad and Save it as Reg.bat on
your Desktop then double click the Reg.bat to execute it and click "YES" to
register the Required DLLs for the windows updates engine.

regsvr32 Msxml.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Reboot the machine and see if you will be able to get and install any updates.
