Widescreen monitor

I'm looking into getting a Gateway FPD2185W monitor.

I brought my wife's laptop to the store and discovered that in order
to view pictures without distortion, I needed to set it to the native
1680x1050 size.

Anybody know what its native size is when the monitor is vertical?

I also discovered that I couldn't run a VGA game without losing much
of the picture. That was solved by setting the resolution down to
VGA size before running the game. But that is a real pain. Is
there an easy way to do this?

My wife has an ATI video card on her laptop, and I have a ATI Radeon
9250 at home. (I had a 9200 but suspecting my videocard was bad
instead of my monitor, I replaced it for a trial, but was unable to
get my old card working again).

Native pixel format? If it's 1680 x 1050 when in "landscape"
orientation, then it has to be 1050 x 1680 when "portrait" (what
I think you mean by "vertical."

One would think so, but I've never seen that on a video card.

Doesn't matter - a panel's native format (i.e., the
physical number of pixels horizontally and vertically)
doesn't (can't) change simply when it's rotated into
a "portrait" (long axis vertical) orientation. Whether or
not there's a standard timing for this "new" format
is irrelevant - you only have so many pixels, either way.

My experience (Dell 2405fpw) has been that when you rotate the monitor, the
resolutions will "rotate" to accomodate the monitor. With my current config
of the 2405 & ATI 9600 Pro, the card drivers will "reverse" the listed
resolutions. Make sure you have the newest drivers for the card. Also,
download the ATI uninstaller utility here:

The uninstaller works well. If you use this utility and re-install your 9200
drivers, you should be fine. Remember, use the latest drivers at:

Looking up various monitors on the Internet, I suspect that my problem
is assuming I will have knowledgeable salesmen if I go to computer
stores who have set up monitors correctly in the first place.

Or who have a clue.
