Widescreen monitors

I am looking to replace my monitor with a wide screen monitor. One
question I have is what will happen when I run full-screen games such
as the ones RealArcade sells.

My current monitor, a Sony Trinitron Multiscan 400PS seems to have
troubles with VGA. When I boot my computer the pre-Windows text is
shaking on the screen - with either computer I use.

My main computer has an ATI card which I replaced with another ATI
card (PowerColor 9250) with no change. When I set my screen to some
modes I get a strong ghost and/or tremendous text movement. Also, I
keep a toolbar on the right of my screen. When a game changes my
screen to VGA, this toolbar (at VGA size) often flickers into view as
I play, especially if my cursor gets close to it.

What would happen if I buy a Gateway FPD2185W 21" wide screen monitor
when I run games?

Check with the software manufacturer of the games in question, most probably
will NOT run if they are for pre Win XP technology.

A standard LCD monitor just likes resolutions far higher than those games
support.

I took my wife's laptop to the store and played with the monitor.

When I looked at pictures, they were distorted until I set her laptop
to the monitor's native 1680 x 1050 resolution, distorting her
monitor's pictures. I suppose there are other resolutions with the
same shape. When I tried a VGA game, most of the picture was off
the monitor, making it unplayable (fortunately I could find the exit
buttons on her laptop). I finally figured that I needed to reset
the video to game resolution before running a game.

I wonder if there is a utility to switch easily - it would be a big
pain switching by hand to run such a game.

The monitor also can be vertical, but again I have to use the ATI
utilities to turn the screen over. Clumsy. I didn't find out if
there was a native sideways resolution.

Actually, I googled that a couple of hours ago. I figured I will try
it when I get home - but it still appears that I need to run it before
and after running a game - and I don't know whether it handles
switching to vertical and back. I don't keep icons on my desk - I
wonder if I can batch this with shortcuts that run the games.
