Widescreen Monitor and Windows 98se

I have a multi boot machine (using an NVIDIA graphics card) that I can boot
in Linux, Windows XP Pro and Windows 98se and I have just acquired a 19 inch
widescreen monitor with native resolution of 1440 x 900 at 60hzs.

Linux had a 1440 x 900 option in the list of available resolutions and that
worked fine. Windows XP did not but I was able to create a custom setting
and that works fine. The odd one is Windows 98se. I have the option to
set custom resolutions but when I enter 1440 x 900 it says that the custom
resolution cannot be added.

Is this because Windows 98se cannot handle that resolution or is there a way
around. Currently, in Win 98se I am using 1280 x 800 which gives me the
same height/width ratio but I would like to get it to 1440 x 900 if
possible.

It could mean that you may need the DRIVER for Win98 to handle the
monitor, graphic card, and resolution.

I had already downloaded the latest Win 98 drivers from NVIDIA in readiness
for the new monitor.

I think he means you need the Driver for the monitor. It tells Windows
what Resolutions and refresh rates your monitor is capable of.

That hadn't occurred to me as no drivers were included with the monitor. I
have just gone to the HP site and downloaded them. I will post back when I
have installed them.

I thought that would crack it but in Win 98 I still get the message that the
1440 x 900 resolution cannot be installed. It is still running in 1280 x
800 which gives the same ratio but leaves everything a bit big. As I said
earlier the same graphic card is happily providing 1440 x 900 for Win XP and
Suse Linux 10.1.

Are there any other possibilities?

Possibly Powerstrip might help:
